Professor Axel Haverich has been the director of the MHH HTTG Surgery Clinic since 1996. He completed his studies in human medicine as well as his complete surgical training at the MHH. From here he was appointed Chief Surgeon of Cardiac and Vascular Surgery at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel for the period 1993 to 1996.
In 1995, Professor Haverich received the Leibniz Prize for German Scientists from the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 1996, he founded the basic research laboratory of the HTTG Clinic, the Leibniz Research Laboratories for Biotechnology and Artificial Organs (LEBAO). There, the foundation was laid for many scientific achievements. Scientist Haverich and his colleagues succeeded in producing a biological heart valve that grows with the patient.
Professor Haverich is co-editor of the internationally renowned scientific "European Journal of Cardio-thoracic Surgery". In 2006, the Cluster of Excellence "REBIRTH", which is based on Professor Haverich's key initiative and whose spokesman he is, was promoted to a nationwide competition. Here, possibilities of regenerative therapy are explored.
In addition to numerous presidencies, he was from 2010 to 2011 President of the German Society of Surgery.
As a passionate physician and surgeon, Professor Haverich is a consultant to the Federal Government on medical issues. Numerous internationally groundbreaking developments in the field of cardiac, thoracic, transplantation and vascular surgery are directly attributable to his tireless efforts in clinics and research, in which Professor Haverich always pursues just one goal: the well-being of his patients.
