Bernhard Banas is a molecular biologist and physician in particular of transplantation medicine. He is Head of the Transplant Center at the University Hospital Regensburg (UKR) and since 2016 President of the German Transplantation Society (DTG).
Dr. Banas studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and was afterwards from 1993 to 2003 at the medical polyclinic of the hospital of the University of Munich active. There he gained experience as an internist, nephrologist, transplant physician and health economist (MBA).
In 2003, he moved to the Department of Internal Medicine II of the University Hospital Regensburg as an internist and nephrologist and gained international experience through research stays as an Invited Scientist in Seattle, Oxford and Boston.
Since 2008, Banas director of the transplant center Regensburg and since 2013 also the head of nephrology at the Caritas Hospital St. Josef.
His research interests include biology of renal cells and tissues, inflammatory kidney disease, kidney transplantation and other clinical studies funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
Banas supports the plan of Federal Minister Jens Spahn for organ donation.
