DAVID K. C. COOPER, MD, PhD, FRCS

David Cooper is Professor of Surgery and Co-Director of the Xenotransplantation Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the USA.

After 17 years as an academic cardiac surgeon, with a special interest in heart transplantation, he chose to concentrate on research into xenotransplantation, in which field he has been active for almost 40 years. He was the founding honorary secretary of the IXA and its second president. In 2009 he was awarded honorary membership of the IXA. He has a wide interest in xenotransplantation, but with a special interest in the transplantation of organs and islets from genetically-engineered pigs into nonhuman primates.
